Everyone is busy. But are we all busy with the right things? I’ve spoken with many colleagues who say they are “extremely busy.” However, after delving into what they’re busy with, I’ve come to realize that their busyness is an addition problem that really should be a multiplication problem. Multiplying our efforts is essential for expanding the effective use of our time. I propose that being busy with curiosity can solve many issues that arise from continually adding tasks. An unsustainable business leads to burnout. But if we dedicate our time to being curious, we can solve problems we didn’t even know existed.

Reflecting on my years in optometry, being curious about new technologies, strategies, and ways of thinking has been pivotal in becoming profitable. As Partners in Profit has grown, I’ve encountered some colleagues who are perplexed and show little interest in learning more about our program. Their response is often, “We are happy with our current situation.” When I hear that, I have to chuckle because, even as the founder of Partners in Profit, I believe excellence is achieved by continuously seeking improvement and growth; hence, one must be curious. Complacency is not a destination.

So here’s something to ponder: why not set aside an hour or two each week to be curious? Make a call to a colleague, ask a simple question: “What has helped you become more successful and profitable in your business?” By taking the time to be curious about what others are doing and being open to continuous improvement, I would argue that you’ll find greater satisfaction in the growth and profitability you’ll achieve. And as that evolves, you might find yourself less “busy” and on a path to a healthier, more joyful life.

Curious Topics to Explore:

  • Adopting consignment for the majority of your frame board, managed by vendors, not your paid staff.
  • Exploring employment opportunities beyond the U.S.
  • Using an AI-driven scribe to assist with filling out your EHR during exams.
  • Implementing incentives to boost optical sales significantly.
  • Bringing on an associate OD sooner rather than later.

These are just a few topics to spark your curiosity. There are many more to explore, and setting aside regular time each week to delve into these topics, along with acting on your discoveries, should lead to increased efficiencies and a wider profit margin. So the next time someone asks how you’re doing, let’s hope your go-to response won’t just be “busy.”
